Merry Christmas to my wonderful cousins!
Yesterday was the first Christmas morning in 35 years that we haven’t had children in our home. It was peaceful and quiet, but nothing compares with the squealing of kids discovering what Santa brought them. I’m not quite ready for this empty nester life but I guess I don’t have any choice!
We were able to spend sweet holiday time with my daughter’s family who live in Sugar House (3 grandchildren) and through the miracle of technology, we were able to Skype with our other daughter & her family who live in Colorado. (My other 3 grandchildren) Best of all, we were able to Skype with our son David, who is serving a mission in the Philippines. He looked really happy, which is what every parent wants to see. I’m not that old yet, but who would have imagined 20 years ago that we would be able to see and talk to someone in real-time half way around the globe? I wonder what will happen in the next 20 years. Personally, I’m waiting for Scotty to come “beam me up.”
The last time I spoke with my mom on the phone, she told me that 2014 needs to be a better year for the Pocock cousins. It sounds like we have all had our challenges this year. My brother Brian lost his house and 100 mature mango trees in the recent typhoon in the Philippines. It was financially devastating, but all of his wife’s family made it through safe. Jen’s husband has had heart problems and surgery, but he seems to be on the mend. Our year wasn’t great either, but it was filled with tender mercies. Randy was unemployed the entire year, but it gave him the flexibility to travel to California to be with his mother during her last months. She passed away of lung cancer in August.
I’m so happy to be part of this family. You are all such wonderful examples to me. Even if we can’t get together often, please post on our Pocock blog so we can all stay close.
Thanks Mary Ellen for making this happen.

This blog is such a great idea. Once we can get used to looking and writing, I think it will be a great way to keep in touch. It is good to hear that your family is on the mend. Let’s hope that is what is in store for all of the Pococks this year. Keep blogging!
What a nice post, Carolyn! It’s fun to connect this new high-falutin’ way. Wishing you the best 2014.
